School Bus Danger Zones

  • Stay Away from the Bus:

The danger zone extends 10 feet around the bus, and even further in front (up to 30 feet). Students should stay far enough away from the bus until it's time to board or exit.

  • Never Go Behind the Bus:

The driver's visibility is severely limited behind the bus, making it a very dangerous place for students.

  • Cross in Front of the Bus:

When crossing the street after exiting the bus, always cross in front of it, where the driver can see you.

  • Wait for the Driver's Signal:

The driver will signal when it is safe to cross the street. Students should wait for this signal and not cross until instructed.

  • Don't Chase the Bus:

If a student misses the bus, they should never run after it. It's safer to wait for the next one or arrange for alternative transportation.

  • Be Aware of Your Surroundings:

Students should be aware of traffic and other potential hazards when approaching or leaving the bus stop.

  • Report Problems:

If a student sees any dangerous behavior or has a safety concern, they should report it to the driver or a school official.

  • Follow the Driver's Instructions:

The school bus driver is in charge of the students' safety on the bus and at the bus stop.

  • Keep Aisles Clear:

Students should keep bags and belongings out of the aisles to allow for safe movement on and off the bus.

  • Secure Loose Items:

Students should make sure loose drawstrings and other objects are secured before boarding the bus to prevent them from getting caught in the doors or handrails.

  • Use Handrails:

Students should always use the handrails when boarding and exiting the bus.

  • Don't Distract the Driver:

Loud noises or other distractions can take the driver's attention away from the road.
